Cloud Nothings Live at WNYU

Cleveland four-piece Cloud Nothings sprung onto the distorted pop scene in November with their debut LP Turning On — and they've been getting some heavy WNYU airplay with their track on the most recent Blackburn Recordings comp.

The band stopped by WNYU to play some new tracks live on The New Afternoon Show last Thursday — the next day, they opened for Wavves at the Knitting Factory as part of The L Magazine's Northside Festival. An Interview With Todd P. Regarding the MtyMx Festival (The New Afternoon Show, 2/22/10)

New York DIY concert booker Todd P. stopped by the New Afternoon Show on Monday to discuss the details of his upcoming MtyMx All Ages Festival of Art and Music from March 20th—22nd in Monterrey, Mexico, which will bring indie rock acts from the U.S., Mexico and abroad to a 5,000-capacity drive-in movie theater three hours from the U.S. border.

For the past four years, Todd P. has coordinated legendary all-ages/unofficial showcases in Austin, TX at the South By Southwest festival — but this year, his Southern shows are totally separate. He admits that the festival will “prove to be a bigger undertaking,” but expects a more satisfying festival than “what commercial indie rock offers the world.”

“I’m excited to prove [with MtyMx] that DIY doesn’t equal half-assed,” Todd said on NAS. “We want to prove that we can do something hard.”

The main difference between Todd’s MtyMx fest and his previous SXSW endeavors is the audience. “We’re not banking on a huge amount of, let’s say, gringos, crossing the border,” Todd said. “It’s a festival in Mexico, and it’s for Mexicans.” According to Todd, there’s an enormous demand for such a festival in Mexico, where music fans are blocked from crossing the U.S. border for music festivals like SXSW, Coachella and ATP.

“Kids are kind of losing their shit,” he said of the Mexican response thus far. “To say that this is some kind of cultural imperialism is pretty insulting to Mexicans,” he added. “There’s a huge scene for this stuff.”

Todd also discussed the difficulties of being in a Mexican indie rock band today, American misconceptions of Mexican cities, and a lot of other really interesting details about what to expect in Monterrey and how the festival has come to fruition — including how he got Monterrey government funding and met his Mexican co-promoters at Yo Garage. New Jersey: The Emerging Cradle of Extreme Metal. Proof? Disma Hits WNYU: December 12, 2009.

November 2009: I was looking up some new bands to play on my radio show, Soma Degenerate, which I host every Saturday at WNYU. As I stumbled across such New Jersey-based metal outfits as such Evoken and Funebrarum, I found myself before the black, abysmal metal backdrop of Disma’s myspace page. Upon picking up on the serious old-school death metal vibes of their tracks, coupled with the band still being active, I was determined to get them on my show.

Based out of Clifton, New Jersey, Disma was formed in 2007 by guitarists Bill Venner and Daryl Kahan. The band released a demo, entitled Vaults of Membros, this past October. While the band remains relatively underground, it boasts of a lineup that features current and former members of Incantation, Evoken, Goreaphobia, among many others.

Fast-forwarding to the recent present: Disma had agreed to play on my radio show, and was setting up in our closet-sized performance studio. As I walked back from the restroom, a smile crossed my face; the floors beneath me were shaking, as the sounds of the band rehearsing reverberated through all corners of the building, through to the bathroom stalls of lower-level Weinstein. As I entered the studio, I observed five guys, interspersed between colossal Marshal cabs, drum kits, and other equipment. Amidst the congestion and heat of the packed room, all members were headbanging in synchronization to their first track: “Lost in the Burial Fog.” The band proceeded to play four songs: three old, one new (“Manifestation”), followed by a short interview.

Each song was deliberately written. The guitar parts were technical and forceful, yet complemented each other well: adding a doubly discordant dimension to each track. This was only perpetuated by the intensity of Shawn’s drum parts, machine-like in delivery, as well as the soul-piercing, low-tuned bass lines. The vocals, quintessentially death metal in nature, were by no means “cookie monster” in sound, but viscerally resonant of early Incantation (I’m talking Mortal Throne of Nazarene). Each member added his own, unique sound to the total package, without sounding out of place or overpowering. Their band chemistry was visibly tight, which only made for an equally solid sound. Standing before the studio in which the legends of Disma were doing a live-set, I found myself in the crowd of the early Morbid Angel shows I’d always wished I’d been old enough to witness beyond the youtube vid on a 2-D computer screen.

A Grindcore Take on Shiro Ishii: 11.20.09.

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Shiro Ishii is comprised of a modest quadruplet: Julius, Kishor, Jason, and Forrest. Previously consisting of just three members, Forrest is the most recent addition to the band, having been assimilated into the lineup as their “Lakhdive Insurgent.” Paralleling this verbal reduction to primal form is their music: combining the visceral growls and pounding drum beats of grindcore, melodic touches of black metal, and abrasive technicality of death metal, to compose each short (the seeming trademark of modern grind) but musically deliberate track. Such was the case when the band paid a visit to WNYU Radio, 89.1 FM, playing a live-set for Hellhole, the station’s extreme metal show, which hits the airwaves every Friday night, from 9-10:30 p.m.

In the closet-sized performance room of our basement radio station, I got some one-on-one bonding time with the band, recording their 30 minutes on the air. Amidst the claustrophobia of four metal dudes (and their gear) in a small room, listeners were cast into the raw aggression and haunting ambiance of “Chapter Hell: Part II (Prisoner),” which, at the 1:45 mark, catapulted itself into complete rhythmic frenzy. With the wall of atonal guitar riffs, marked by the traces of minor melodies, the drum parts effectively established a rhythmic duet: delivering beats that were fast, without sounding triggered. The bass lines were prominent, bold yet well-complemented by the steady drum beats. All of these elements collided to form the sonic medium through which Forrest delivered his vocals: visceral growls that called to remembrance the horrors of warfare, zombies, and the human destructive impulse. Though a better part of their songs start with modest tempos, the band quickly shoves them into a furious pace that absolutely compels those listening to headbang.

Currently on hiatus writing new material, this is a group that keeps itself busy: saturating the New York metal scene with what’s fresh in grind and beyond, à la local hole-in-the-wall venues that permit. Crystal Stilts Interview

Here's an interview Jonathan (Music Director) and I (Promotions Director) did a while ago. Better late than never. Learn here about alumni that are now in great bands. You, too, can be famous.

Frankie Rose, drummer: I'll interview you. So do you go to NYU then?

Jonathan: ...Gallatin

Andy Adler, bassist: I didn't go to Gallatin, but I took a lot of classes in Gallatin. And a lot of my friends were in Gallatin. And in the big graduation I sat with Gallatin because my friends were there. And my friend Kevin who was there left graduation to get soda and fries, it was cool.

Frankie: So who are you here to see tonight, anyone in particular?

Jonathan: I like Crystal Stilts.

A: Overrated

Frankie: And you?

Kayla: Same thing.

Kayla: So you guys are going to Europe?

Frankie: We are, we're going back to Europe for two weeks, we're gonna do Primavera and Dot to Dot festival.

A: It'll be cool, we're playing with Comet Gain and The Bats in London. So I'm really stoked about that. They're like my favorite band in the world so pretty psyched about that.

J: Have you been there before?

A: Yeah we did a few months ago, for too long, it was like 40 days. The food is so much better, they treat you really nice in Europe.

F: The thing is it's a lot of bread and cheese, a LOT of bread and cheese, which is Andy's favorite thing, but me I got kind of sick of it and still haven't really gotten over it.

J: I hear shows end earlier in Europe, is that true?

A: In England it seems like the show's end earlier, and in France. In Austria it's kind of later. But on the whole yeah.

K: So what is your band spinning, what do you all listen to in the van?

A: Right now in our van we have two CD players and a tape player, none of which work and a cigarette power thing that doesn't work so we're only listening to the radio.

J: European radio?

A: In Europe we could listen to things, in Europe we rented a van. I guess we didn't listen to as much radio as we would have liked in Europe. It would have been fun to explore more European radio. I think a lot of countries have rules about having...like in France I know they have rules about playing a certain percentage of French music.

A: Really. Awesome. Bonjour?

J: Comment ca va?

A: Ca va bien, et vous? ... That's the extent of my French.

K: I watched 30 Rock today and they spoke faux french.

A: Which episode of 30 Rock?

K: The one about Tracy quitting but then that guy got him to come back, what's the guy's name, the old guy with gray hair?

A: Alec Baldwin?

K: Yeah, obviously! He was from my same home town, I would just see him in coffee shops.

J: What's your favorite show you've played, as Crystal Stilts?

A: Playing with Comet Gain was pretty awesome, recently we played 3 shows with them.

A: This is Kyle

J: What does Kyle do?

A: Kyle, where did you go to college?

Kyle Forester, keyboard: I went to a college called NYU.

A: Yeah you did.

J: I don't know who Matt Pinfield is.

A: He did Alternative Nation, 120 Minutes. He would always overexplain bands, to prove that he knew what he talking about. “This is...this is whatever they're on Merge records, which is run by Mac from Superchunk, because I know about music.” But I like him, seems like a nice guy. Little known fact about Matt Pinfield. His first MTV appearance was not on 120 Minutes, it was on the first season of the Real World when Andre's band Raindance goes into some New Jersey station, and the interviewer was Matt Pinfield. That was his first appearance on MTV. Little known fact.

A: We crossed from Canada back into America really quickly and the first song we heard on the radio was The Boys Are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy and it seemed very fitting.

J: Do you have any future recordings to be released?

A: Not yet, we're just working on writing songs.

K: Do you have a favorite studio that you like to record in?

A: Good question...I don't know....Toerag Studio's pretty cool, we met Joe Foster in Scotland, he has a studio there...otherwise...one that has tape.

A: We really like The Clean so that question would not piss us off.

J: How did you...Hamish Kilgour, right, you know him?

A: He knew a record show that Brad and I worked in, so we knew him from that. Rocks in your Head, it doesn't exist anymore. It was a really good record store. I think his studio's around there so Brad knew him from there, so we played with them when they played recently. He's a really nice sweet guy. I think Kyle played on a Mad Scene record.

J: I heard Eric Copeland went to NYU.

K: Oh yeah, he did.

A: I had a good peer group of NYU musicians, it was awesome, of all my friends. Axolotl, Oxford Collapse, Black Dice...and Dave Portner and all those dudes.

J: Can I ask you what your favorite Clean song is? And, actually, including The Great Unwashed.

A: That's hard to say, it's like picking a favorite child. I like Getting Older, that's a good song. I like Beatnik. I like the Comet Gain cover of Beatnik. Hold On To The Rail, that's a good Clean and Great Unwashed song.

K: I was thinking of an old Slumberland thing but then I got confused with the Flying Nun stuff.

A: Slumberland's good too.

K: (inaudible) You know that old ten inch, or twelve inch? I want to listen to that all the time.

A: I like the albums best, I like Bust 'em Green. That's my favorite record that any of those people was ever involved in. I like the Coachwhips and Sic Alps and stuff, but Bust 'Em Green, the Henry's Dress 45 – it's an LP but it runs at 45, it's like twenty five minutes, but that's my favorite thing that any of those people did. We're super stoked about Slumberland, that's a favorite record label of mine growing up. And Mike is the greatest dude around. He's got big plans in the works. Good stuff coming up.

ShowPaper Benefit Tonight!

Attention NYC music aficionados, please be aware of this awesome event goin' down tonight to help raise money for ShowPaper, everyone's favorite indie show listing. If you've gone to any sort of DIY show over the past two years, chances are you were handed the newsprint of concert, art and film listings on your way out.

"I often say ShowPaper runs on a love of music, not money," says Kate Wagner, ShowPaper volunteer and event curator. "But of course we don't run on money, since we have none!" ShowPaper has been volunteer-run and free since it was founded by Todd P two years ago.

Tonight's benefit will go down at 7 p.m. in Red Hook, Brooklyn's Kidd Yellin Gallery and artist collective at 133 Imlay Street. "The event will reach out to an extended new audience of arts enthusiasts while preserving the intimate feel of a typical ShowPaper underground show," Kate said. More details on the event below.

No Age and Raekwon Perform for NYU at Le Poisson Rouge

On Thursday, NYU's annual Mystery Concert went down at Le Poisson Rouge with No Age and Raekwon performing for NYU students and anyone else who was able to sneak in. The crowd seemed to have mostly shown up for Raekwon, although a small push-pit did ensue after No Age offered some encouragement. Raekwon offered some encouragement as well, mentioning between nearly every song that his new album is out, and that everyone should keep "real music" alive and go buy it.

Hellhole 89.1 FM is proud to sponsor a Metal Night, this Friday, September 18, which is to be held in Brooklyn, New York (at the Red Star Bar).

Hellhole is the Friday night metal show, running on the New York University’s radio station, and airing on 89.1 FM and WNYU.org, starting at 9 PM (EST). The show, created 25 years ago, has established itself as a staple in the New York metal community, saturating the airwaves with everything along the spectrum of extreme metal: death, black, grind, doom, thrash, sludge, gore, and beyond.

This September’s show will be concentrating on modern death metal acts, in particular, Misery Index, Criminal Element (featuring members of Suffocation, Misery Index and ex-Dying Fetus), Lethean, The Communion, and Pyrrhon. It will be co-sponsored by Generation Records, a record shop based in Lower Manhattan.

Brooklyn based Pink Reason stopped into the studio today along with Wisconsin group Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones. Hue Blanc's double drum garage assault is followed by a noisy incarnation of Pink Reason, featuring members of the Joyless Ones. This was recorded on the last day of their joint tour. White/Light came by WNYU to record a session last weekend. The band is based in Chicago and artfully combines droning noise, interesting synth and pedal work, and guitar solos (making good use of what's known as the "Smashing Pumpkins" guitar pedal. They played with Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth on drums - the first time the group had played together. Here's the link to the session:
